A suburb that is mostly roof

Wetherill Park is dominated by the Smithfield-Wetherill Park industrial estate, one of the largest industrial areas in the country. Most of the residential population lives in the south-eastern corner, with Stockland Wetherill Park, the nature reserve and The Horsley Drive shaping the rest.

How a big sheet roof fails

Box gutters. Internal gutters running between roof planes or behind parapets. They collect everything the roof collects, silt up at the sumps, and corrode at the low points. When they overflow, the water goes inside the building and onto stock.

Rooflights. Translucent sheets that have been under hard western Sydney sun for twenty years go brittle and yellow. Hail finishes them.

Fixings. Tens of thousands of screws, each with a rubber washer. Heat cycling hardens them, and the roof starts weeping at random points.

Cut edges and laps. Corrosion creeping along where sheets were cut on site.

Penetrations. Exhaust fans, ducts, cable trays and solar mounts, each one a hole that was flashed by somebody at some point.
